I’d Like to Buy a Bowel

May we really be on the verge of a diagnosis?  I know, I know – We’ve thought this before with Celiac so we aren’t getting our hopes up.

If we get this diagnosis I want to point out that I was right 8 years ago when I was told I wasn’t.

Although I’ve had problems my entire life they may be separate.  Everything leading up to the surgery I had is one thing and from that point on another.

Only a few weeks after surgery the Hubby and I were at his parents when I had my first bout of *this*.  We all freaked out, I passed out and they called 911.  I was told it was a flu.

A few days later while curled up on the couch I was watching Oprah (yeah yeah, I watch it on occasion and being that her ratings are so high so do all of you) and Carnie Wilson was on talking about her weight loss from Gastric bypass.  She has a complication from it that sounded eerily familiar.  It’s called Gastric Dumping Syndrome.  I had my post surgical follow up shortly afterwards and brought it up with the surgeon.  He told me it was way too rare and everything I was experiencing was normal for what happened and will pass.  I believed him – He was the doctor after all and had been so good with me.  I should have known better.

Dumping syndrome in a nutshell is caused when the lower end of the small intestine, the jejunum, fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach.

By leaving it for so long it’s caused a whole slew of problems and turning it from manageable to severe.  In fact, it’s quite likely that I will be back in surgery again.  This time preforming a similar procedure but on the pyloris instead.

It’s ironic.  The surgery was done so that I wouldn’t have to remain medicated for my entire life.  Knowing what I know now I’d still do it again but to slow down digestion I will be put back on the same medication we tried to avoid.

Having my gallbladder out saved my life but if this is dumping syndrome lit sure didn’t help that.

Other things not yet ruled out are Crohn’s, Gastritis and many other ailments.  We just know this has gone from annoying to debilitating and am considered a rush case in my referrals.
