Speech

Thing 1 has always been a little behind in his speech. On his second birthday he was barely saying anything so we went on a wait list for speech therapy. He had his first appointment just before Thing 2 was born.

At that point he was speaking much better than when we had signed him up. The wanted us to practise a few things and have him re-asses in a few month. Last week he went back.

I could have sworn up and down he would have been released. He talks up a storm now. Well he wasn’t released. They pointed out how his speech hasn’t changed much since last time. He says more now but doesn’t use a lot of sentences unless he is repeating us. His pronunciation isn’t very well and he absolutely refuses to make an “F” sound. I didn’t see that as abnormal for his age but apparently it is. There are also a few other things but those are the biggies.

The next step is a 6 week intensive program. I know this is good for him but it makes me sad. I know the speech is lacking only because he is so busy that he can’t be bothered but it makes me feel like a failure.

I refuse to believe this is a failure on your part (or on mine for that matter). JT has been in ST since he was 19 months old. Twice a week. He is now 3 and entering into special education pre-school due to his speech delay. He doesn’t speak in sentences either. This is not your fault. It can happen. And you are being a wonderful mom by getting him the help he needs to catch up! I can’t wait to hear about the great progress he will make!

  2. Chrissy says:

You are not a failure! (((((hugs)))) I hope Caden surprises everyone by the end of the 6w program and excels with the classes.
