When Thing 2 was born I had a reaction to my Doctor’s latex gloves. We weren’t sure if it was a fluke since my body was under stress or it was a true allergy.
The first thing I thought is that was a fluke, but the more I thought about it there had been a few things that could be explained by this. I’ve always found condoms irritating. In fact before Hubby and I were married I used to get UTI’s all the time. Once we were married they magically stopped. Was it just luck or was it because we had started trying to get pregnant with Thing 1? Another thing I’ve noticed is that when I wear feminine hygiene products I swell up like a balloon.
My poor hooha seems to be the one getting the problems doesn’t it?
Yesterday I had an appointment with the allergist to find out once and for all. Of course the results were questionable. There were 2 tests. The first was a blood test which he says is not very sensitive. He usually sees negative results even on people he knows are deathly allergic. The next was a skin prick test. The area reddened but no hive appeared.
His best guess is I don’t yet have a full blown allergy but it is developing. The first thing to do is not to put latex near my bits again, I should find some organic products to avoid latex in tampons and pads. As for everything else I should resume as normal until I have a problem.
I also ordered a MedicAlert necklace to alert anyone of this should I not be able too. If my body is down I will react and if I am in the hospital the odds are I’m down right? I should have got one years ago as I am also allergic to Penicillin and Keflex but this is icing on the cake.
Now that I know just how many products have latex in them I am overwhelmed completely knowing this is my future.
Foods
- Banana
- Avocado
- Kiwi
- Chestnuts
These are all grown on rubber trees so I won’t be able to even touch them once this develops.
Items
- Clothing Elastics (in underwear for example)
- Band aids
- Feminine Hygiene Products
- Condoms
- Pacifiers
- Diapers
- Baby Bottle Nipples
- and much much much more
How on earth do I get around this? I know people do it every day and I too will manage but what, am I going to have to wear polyurethane gloves to change my children’s diapers?
